DIY hair masks.

I like to eat food.
I also like to put food in my hair.
Weird? Maybe. But, in my opinion, it sometimes beats
the high prices of commercial hair products and works just as well!
The other day I had a blissful little at home "spa" day.
I soaked my feet and painted my tootsies
and treated my locks to one of my favorite DIY hair masks.
Here are two I really like:

Coconut oil hair mask
Originally I bought coconut oil (which, oddly enough, comes in solid form)
because I read on some obscure corner of the internet that it helped with acne.
Um, no. Rubbing oil on your acne doesn't work after all (who'da thunk?).
But it's great at making your hair softer and shinier.
Grab a tablespoon or two (depending on the length and thickness of your hair)
but don't get too much or it will be hard to wash out.
Massage it into the ends of your hair and work your way up,
stopping a few inches from your roots.
Put on a shower cap (or in this resourceful woman's case, a plastic shopping bag)
and blow-dry your wrapped head on medium or low for a few minutes
to warm your hair and allow the oil to really penetrate.
Promptly wrap a towel around the shower cap to keep the heat it and wait for 30 minutes.
Unwrap and wash your hair as usual.

Mayo, egg & olive oil hair mask
This one is my favorite, although I recommend using it only
when you can deal with greasy-ish hair for a few days, as it takes some time
for the product to wash out and to reap the benefits.
Start with freshly washed, still damp hair.
Mix 1 tbsp olive oil, one egg yolk and
enough mayonnaise (full fat!) to cover your hair (I use about 1/2 cup),
then massage the mixture through your hair, all the way to your roots.
Pile it on top of your head and slap on a shower cap (or that trusty plastic shopping bag).
Wrap a towel around the cap for extra holding power and extra heat.
Wait for 30 minutes then thoroughly rinse hair but DO NOT wash with shampoo.
Your hair will be gross (you'll also smell like a sandwich)
but waiting a day before shampooing really helps let the mask sink in.
Even after shampooing, your hair will probably be greasy-ish,
but I promise the protein and fatty acids in this mask will give you shiny, strong hair
in the end (it's worth the wait).

What're your favorite DIY beauty treatments? I'm up to try them!

  1. Gosh I love this! I have been wanting to do a hair mask for a while now and wasn't totally satisfied with one I bought at the store. Looking forward to trying the mayo/egg/olive oil one! Thank you!!

  2. I didn't know you weren't supposed to wash the mayo/egg/oil mask with shampoo! Dang.

I did that one a few years ago and OMG. It is the worst smell. Next time I'll do it when i don't have to be in public for like 6 months or more. Bad. It was bad. But the coconut oil mask sounds nice! I'll definitely have to try that one.

  3. Thanks for posting this! My hair needs some TLC after being over processed & out in the sun too much! Not sure about the mayo/egg/oil mask, but will def. try the coconut oil. BTW, do you apply the coconut oil to wet or dry hair?

  4. I love coconut oil! I've been using it in my hair for a few months now and I do think it's making it stronger. I've never thought to heat it though. I usually put it in my ends and put my hair in a bun and go work out. I figure, the heat from my body maybe does the same thing? Thank you for sharing! I've been wondering what your secrets were for gorgeous hair.

  6. I love enjoying a home day spa!

I'd be willing to try that coconut one; my husband would move into the living room if I did the mayo one!!

  9. I too love putting food in my hair. The mayo/egg/olive oil is the best one I've come across too (minus looking like an unwashed hobo afterwords.)

  12. when it comes to hair masks I have used avocado oil and almond oil. separately of course. for the ends I have also used grape seed oil and all three work for long hair. but now I'm also considering coconut oil.
